Risk assets have had a horrible 2022. For equities, the lows usually come amid widespread redemptions, when households have lost jobs or are fearful for their employment prospects. That usually happens during a deep recession. So far, the slowdown has been mild, and mass job losses haven’t materialized. The Federal Reserve may need to break the employment market to prevent higher wages from becoming embedded in the economy. That’s a story for 2023.
