On June 19, Colombians will choose between two outsiders as the country’s presidential election heads to a historic runoff. Left-wing populist Gustavo Petro is a former M-19 guerrilla running on a platform of income equality and environmentalism. His center-right opponent Rodolfo Hernandez is a wealthy businessman pushing an anti-corruption message, a different kind of populist who’s pledged to shrink the government and use the savings to pay off student debt. Whichever candidate wins, this election marks a major shift in Colombian politics, with meaningful long-term implications for the domestic economy as well as local and foreign investors.
