- Browder took on large Russian companies such as Gazprom, Surgutneftegaz, Unified Energy Systems, and Sidanco, and in retaliation, he was refused entry to Russia, deported to the UK, and declared a threat to Russian national security in 2005.
- In 2009 his Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was killed in a Moscow prison after uncovering and exposing a $230 million fraud committed by Russian government officials.
